This doctoral study has been a metamorphosis of my mind – a very joyful one, I should add. During the past four years, I have had the opportunity to work with people for whom I have the greatest respect and admiration. Some I have known since I began my studies in architecture 15 years ago – others just for a short while.
I will take this opportunity to thank them all for their contribution to this dissertation, for their willingness to discuss matters that had my attention and for their guidance into areas that I had only begun to conceive.
So, even though it is my mind that has been constructed anew, it could not have been done without the assistance of others:
Michele Saee and Kirsten Birk Hansen, who formed my initial architectural mind.
Thomas Hines, Kathryn Smith, Anna Wohl, Birgitta Wohl, Judith Sheine, Jocelyn Gibbs, Benedicte Gilman and Kurt Helfrich during my visit to the Schindler archives at California State University Santa Barbara, The Getty Research Institute in Santa Monica and to my many excursions in Southern California.
Kaj Grønbæk, Preben Mogensen, Peter Krogh, Mette Agger Eriksen and all at WorkSpace (University of Aarhus).
Kim Halskov, Andreas Lykke Olesen, Rune Nielsen and all at CAVI (Center for Advanced Visualization and Interaction, University of Aarhus).
Kristian Berg Nielsen, my adviser, Jørgen Dehs, Poul Bæk Pedersen, Hans Peter Svendler Nielsen, Uffe Lentz, Martin Bendsøe, Charlotte Bundgaard, Mark Dyson, Niels Olhoff, Jens Fynbo, John Rasmussen and all at CID (Center for Integreret Design).
Especially Tina-Henriette Kristiansen, who has been my playmate in space the past three years.
And finally, last but not least, my wife Malene who has been a decisive support for the outcome of this endeavor.
Thank you.
