Construction

Construct: FIE

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

Aim

The idea of FIE (Folded up Interactive Environment) is at the same time quite simple and extremely advanced. A virtual design space is projected onto a semi transparent dynamic material, which is tracked for location in space. The interaction occurs when the material is twisted and bend to act as the interface between the virtual space that is projected upon it and the data of the embedded spaces. FIE is in this way a continuation of SARIE.

Construction

We could say that FIE is constructed from four zones:
1) A static real space (our normal surroundings),
2) A dynamic real space (the space in which the interaction takes place),
3) A virtual opaque space (where there is no virtual manifestations) and
4) A virtual transparent space (where the virtual information spaces becomes visible).

Adding to these four zones there could be an endless array of manifestations in sound, feel, wind and other ambient media, as it was the case with The Blind Architect. The spatial environment will change materiality and form depending on the interaction wanted and the information displayed.

Discussion

The design criteria for FIE have been to create a seamless transition between these four zones, so that the user will experience it as one complete environment. To achieve this, the designed solutions should not be a ‘war room’ or a ‘transporter booth’ as seen is other solutions, but rather a well-designed environment with unusual features, which could be folded up and put away when not in use.

The structure of the shared environment – and thereby the spaces – in The Virtual Architect, can be described with the use of three concepts: 1) Process which describe three different phases or zones of the architectural design process. 2) Interaction, which describes the level of interaction between the single spaces and the data objects ranging from passive to active. 3) Properties, which describes the particular rules, parameters and constraints of the single space.(1)

The project is comparable to the issues of The Blind Architect and SARIE. It could also be seen as an augmented solution to the design space that was created as an immersive solution in The Virtual Architect. Overall, FIE draws heavily on the knowledge produced in other investigations and constructions, especially on issues like critical space, spatial media and the structure of space.

On the DVD with video and image material in the back of this dissertation, there is short video that shows the different elements of the construction and how a final environment of the design space may be.
